Should I Seek Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontics Milwaukee, WI

If you are concerned about the alignment of your teeth, you may find yourself asking, “Should I seek orthodontic treatment?” This is a good question, and the answer comes in several phases.

The most simple answer is this — you should seek orthodontic treatment when you have questions about your teeth alignment or the integrity of your bite. Sometimes, these issues are inconveniently visible. For instance, if you find it hard to chew, bite or speak, or if a few of your teeth are visibly protruding, misplaced or crowded, it may be time to seek orthodontic care.

Other situations may not be as visible. Teeth clenching or grinding, mouth breathing and discomfort when closing the mouth are all indications that you may require orthodontic treatment. Also, if the jaws are continually shifting out of position or make clicking sounds during movement, or if you find yourself biting your cheek or tongue involuntarily, then an appointment may be in line.

When teeth meet abnormally, it may result in facial disparity (asymmetry), which means some facial features are more pronounced than others. This issue can be corrected with orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontics for children

Aside from the situations outlined above, children have some particular needs. The American Academy of Orthodontists (AAO) advise that children should have their first orthodontic appointment by age seven — this is for two excellent reasons.

First is the fact that tooth development at that age is unpredictable; therefore, only a dental professional will be able to determine if the child has an orthodontic issue or if it is a simple growth variation. At that age, a dentist or orthodontist can tell if the gum is spacious enough for permanent teeth.

Second, early examination and diagnosis make it easier to treat most conditions, especially when the child is still undergoing the natural growth processes.
Childhood issues such as premature or late loss of baby teeth, constant thumb sucking, mouth breathing and tongue thrusting can be corrected with orthodontic care. This does not mean the treatment has to commence immediately; in fact, almost all kids do not start treatment until the age of 9 to 14 years.

Orthodontics for adults

Orthodontic treatment is not just for children, as people of all ages can benefit from the care. If you find yourself always trying to hide your smile or get self-conscious around strangers because of your imperfect teeth, then it is time for you to book an appointment with our office to see how we can help you achieve a beautiful smile.

Orthodontic treatment works at all stages of life — and the issue of non-compliance is not a problem. With the development of clear aligners, lingual braces and clear ceramic brackets, you do not have to worry about the visibility of the corrective device. Depending on the severity of the condition and period, the we will suggest the best appliance for the process.

Final note

Orthodontic treatment is not just about appearance. It is easy to clean and maintain appropriately aligned teeth. Proper bite prevents issues with speaking or eating, and you get healthy teeth that make up a beautiful smile.
