The word "endodontist" is derived from two Greek words, which stand for “inside the tooth.” They are dental specialists who focus on problems related to tooth pulp and nerves in the teeth. The pulp is located in the tooth’s center and consists of living cells and tissues. The soft tissue is regarded as the most important part of the tooth because it promotes blood flow.
If the pulp is infected, you will need a root canal treatment, a procedure performed only by endodontists.
Endodontists are dental care professionals who have passed through two to three years of specialist training after dental school to become professional orthodontists. They specialize in any of the following conditions:
Endodontists learn the details about root canals and interrelated processes to enable more accurate diagnoses and treatments of different conditions related to the delicate areas of the teeth. They are also qualified for other dental procedures, such as tooth replants if your tooth is removed from its socket by accident. All endodontists pass through dental school after their first degree and are qualified dentists. They are specialists because they proceeded to obtain extra two or more years of advanced training on endodontics. Since they have narrowed their practice to endodontic care, endodontists deal specifically on treating issues related to dental pulp. Every week, they perform about 25 root canals or more. Endodontists do not have the role of filling or cleaning the teeth; instead, they focus on the diagnosis and treatment of tooth pain. They have the necessary skills for detecting the cause of dental or facial pain.
Endodontists have the equipment and devices to ensure a comfortable and productive treatment. Some of their devices include a dental dam (a thin sheet of latex) to separate the tooth during dental procedures, as a way of shielding the mouth. 3-D imaging and digital radiographs help endodontists capture quality images of tooth anatomy to determine the extent and position of infection. The gap in the root canal is so small that these dental experts require dental operating microscopes to get better views of the root canal for adequate treatment.
Endodontists have expert skills to put their patients at ease during treatment procedures. Aside from the comfortability of their procedures, the tooth pain should fade immediately after the treatment.
