Dental Crowns – How to Identify When Something Is Wrong

dental crowns Milwaukee, WI

After getting dental crowns, it is normal for patients’ mouths to feel different. However, it should not cause significant problems for the patient. There are a few signs that something is wrong after getting a new crown. Read on to learn more.

Problems with the crown

The crown should not be loose or unstable. The cement the dentist used to apply the crown is designed to keep the crown securely in place. If the crown is loose, it can easily fall out and be lost.

If the crown does not feel secure enough to eat as normal, there may be a problem. Crowns are meant to do more than simply cover and protect the tooth. Dental crowns should also restore the function of the tooth so that the patient can eat food as normal without pain.

Dental crowns are custom-designed to fit each tooth. The crown should have a solid feel to it once it has been put into place. If it does not feel snug, there may be problems with the tooth’s structure or the way the crown was created.

If the crown is older, the cement may simply be wearing off. This can happen anywhere between five and 20 years after the crown has originally been attached. This is not a problem with the fit of the crown. Instead, the cement simply needs to be replaced.

Problems with the bite

A patient’s bite should feel natural and comfortable. This means that each of the back teeth should meet when the patient is fully biting down. Some of the front teeth may also touch, although lighter than in the back. The dental crown should not affect a patient’s natural bite. While a new crown may feel different at first, it should not cause any problems while chewing or otherwise biting down.

Gaps between the crown and other teeth

There should not be any gaps between other teeth because of the crown. These gaps are small enough to make cleaning difficult but large enough that bits of food can become trapped. This can lead to bad breath, gum problems and eventual decay of the teeth. Any gaps are problems that a dentist should take care of.

Taking care of dental crowns

To prevent damage to a dental crown, patients should avoid eating hard foods near the area. This can cause the crown to crack, chip or become loose. The tooth can be sensitive after a new crown, so avoiding very hot or cold foods can help eliminate sensitivity while the area begins to heal. It is a good idea to avoid sugary foods as well.

Visit a dentist today

If you are concerned about your dental crown, it is time to visit a dentist. It is extremely important to have your crown fixed if there is a problem. The crown is designed to protect your tooth from infection or other problems. If the crown is damaged, it cannot do so and you may end up needing a more invasive procedure.
